The Alamo City Golf Trail, which operates all of the golf courses owned by the City of San Antonio, announced today that they would again be requiring all customers to wear masks while indoors at their facilities. This requirement would apply whether or not an individual has been vaccinated or not.
This announcement comes in response to an August 10, 2021 order from the San Antonio City Manager to address recent increases in the COVID-19 positivity rate. The MCGA Board released its schedule for calendar year 2021. A printable .pdf document is available for download here.
On Saturday, November 7th, the 2nd Annual Alamo Cup was contested at Vaaler Creek Golf Club. This match play event pits 30 players from the MCGA against SWAGG, another local golf club in San Antonio.
All of the matches were closely contested but at the end the Mission City linksters once again came out with a narrow victory 258.5 to 245.5. The MCGA keeps the bragging rights and the Alamo Cup for another year. From the buzz heard in the 19th hole after the round concluded it was evident that all of the golfers had a great time. The 2020 MCGA Club Championship was contested by 33 golfers on Saturday October 31, 2020 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort. The weather started out at a chilly 40F but it eventually warmed to the mid-70's. As usual the Hyatt was in great shape and played pretty tough with only three golfers' gross scores breaking 80. But unusually, the competition for the championship boiled down to winning the "A" flight. Three players in the A flight were close and all had an excellent shot of winning the trophy. Rick Klunk and Joe Renaud played neck and neck with one another for most of the day but Kevin Davidson put on a late charge with two birdies in his last two holes. In the end, Klunk's 77 (net 73) was the low gross score but Renaud's 78 (net 71) won the title by one over Davidson's 79 (net 72) and by two over Klunk.
The Top 5 point earners played for the 2020 MCGA Tour Championship, Saturday October 17, 2020 at Canyon Springs Golf Course. The course was extra tough with the newly-rebuilt greens being very firm and unpredictable. And add to that the steady pressure of the playoff finals and the scores went high. Here are the final results: 1st Place - Fred Zajonczkoski 2nd Place - Steve Lopez 3rd Place - Mike Fisk 4th Place - Pete Cliburn 5th Place - Joe Renaud
The second round of the Tour Championship Playoffs was played Saturday, September 26, 2020 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort. The top twenty in points from after the first playoff round were all vying to move up into the top 10 in points by shooting some good scores. The Oaks and Lakes courses proved extremely challenging for the field as scores were higher. Not everyone had bad days as a couple of golfers were able to play well, earn lots of points and jump up into the Top 5. Below is where the top twenty golfers finished with the top 10 moving on to the next playoff round on Saturday, October 12, 2020 at SilverHorn Golf Club.

In a short and briefly worded email and website post, Golf Channel announced the immediate shut down of their GOLF Am Tour on May 13, 2020. Though the news wasn't completely unexpected, the harsh reality of the end to a largely successful endeavor stung many.
No single reason was given for the decision, but the prior COVID-19 cancellation of the season certainly was a major factor in it. Their is some optimism among tour members that another ownership group will pick the tour up for next season. After almost three weeks of strict COVID-19 protocols in the city of San Antonio, a few outdoor activities like golf are being permitted to be enjoyed again. In an email to its members, the Alamo City Golf Trail (ACGT) announced today that all eight of its golf courses were opening on Tuesday, April 21 for golf play. The ACGT received the blessing of the City of San Antonio by adopting some policy changes to assure the safety and health like walking the courses and other social distancing measures at all of its facilities.
Most of the golf clubhouse, retail, bar and food service operations are still largely shuttered, but at least a full return to normal for golfers appears to be right around the corner. The ripples from the Stay Home, Work Safe Order issued by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County have finally impacted the Mission City Golf Association. In an email to its members, MCGA President Joey Hernandez announced the cancellation of its weekly golf events for the remainder of April. He summarized the present difficult situation of a large group playing golf safely by saying, "as much as we tried, we couldn't outrun what's happened in the world."
As to when MCGA events would resume, he was hopeful of May 1st or, "once this shelter in place is lifted, and the golf courses are reopened, the board will do all it can to see if our 2020 schedule is still in place." That's just a few short weeks away. Let's all hope that normalcy returns to the world these restrictions are lifted by then. The City of San Antonio and Bexar County have amended the "Stay Home, Work Safe Order" today to add new, more severe measures including; "Closes all municipal and private golf courses and driving ranges (including frisbee courses)." In response to this, The Alamo City Golf Trail, which includes all city-owned San Antonio golf courses, also issued a news release today that all ACGT golf facilities would comply with the amended order and close for the remainder of the month of April, and reopen Friday May 1st, 2020.
Non-ACGT courses should be announcing their plans shortly. SilverHorn Golf Club sent an email today that they would be honoring the Mayor's order and is now closed. Other San Antonio and Bexar County courses should be following suit shortly. Stay tuned for further updates. |
